Desks > Depth - 19-1/2 in

The Desks category spans writing desks, executive desks, computer desks, L-shaped, U-shaped, stand-alone, reception, standing-height, roll-top, and modular pedestal variants, covering most common configurations used in a commercial setting. The appropriate subtype depends on worksurface area requirement, storage configuration, occupant role, and room footprint available for that position. A private office and an open-plan bullpen typically call for different subtypes even within the same building, so subtype selection should be treated as a room-by-room decision rather than a single facility-wide standard applied uniformly.

Standard worksurface widths run 48 to 72 inches, with depths of 24 to 30 inches and heights of 28 to 30 inches for seated positions. L-shaped configurations pair a main surface of 60 to 72 inches with a return of 36 to 48 inches. U-shaped configurations add a bridge of 36 to 48 inches connecting the two wings into a single unit. These dimensions should be checked against the room floor plan, including doorway width for larger single-piece tops that must be moved into the room fully assembled without disassembly.

Commercial desk worksurfaces typically carry load ratings of 100 to 200 pounds evenly distributed, with heavy-equipment configurations rated up to 250 pounds for specialized use. Commercial frames are built for daily 8-hour occupancy, a materially different duty cycle than residential frames designed for occasional use at home. Weight rating should be checked against the BIFMA X5.5 standard, which governs desk product testing and provides the basis for comparing frames across different manufacturers on a consistent, industry-recognized standard applied uniformly across the market.

Thermally fused laminate suits value-tier procurement, high-pressure laminate suits hard-use environments, and wood veneer over an engineered core suits executive and director-level programs, including roll-top or executive-grade styling for senior positions. Edge treatment — knife-edge for a modern look, banded edge as a standard option, or mitered veneer for executive presentation — should be selected to match the room's broader aesthetic and the finish family used elsewhere in that same space or building, particularly where several rooms share one procurement order.

Most commercial desks require assembly of the frame, worksurface, return wing, pedestal, and modesty panels using a standard driver set and Allen key, with hardware included in the shipment. Executive-tier and U-shaped configurations typically require two-person assembly for panel alignment and worksurface placement, given the size and weight of the components involved in those larger builds. Assembly duration should be checked against the project schedule, particularly for larger multi-wing configurations that take considerably longer than a single rectangular desk to fully assemble and align.

Standard rectangular desks suit open-plan and private office positions where space is more limited. L-shaped desks suit primary private office positions needing a return wing for secondary task work alongside the main surface. U-shaped desks suit executive and director positions requiring three worksurface wings for expanded work area. Roll-top and executive-grade veneer desks are typically reserved for senior leadership positions per the facility's procurement specification, where visual presentation carries real weight alongside function for visiting clients, staff, and board members touring the facility.

Shape — rectangular, L-shape, U-shape, peninsula, or return — should be checked against the room floor plan first, before any other factor. Storage configuration, including pedestal drawers, hutch, or lateral file, should be checked against the occupant's storage requirement at that position. Finish family should align with the procurement specification for room coordination across the floor. The product page for each series documents shape, storage, and finish options to support this comparison across competing models before a final specification is submitted for approval.

Leveling glides, pedestal drawer slides, lock cylinders, worksurface edge banding, and cable management grommets are the primary serviceable components across most commercial desk series available today. Availability is listed on the product page for each series offered by a given manufacturer for that specific desk line and finish. Replacement components should be checked against the warranty coverage scope, since some parts may already be covered under the existing warranty rather than requiring a separate purchase order placed independently by facilities staff.

Commercial desks tested to applicable BIFMA standards carry warranties of 10 to 15 years in the industry, compared to roughly 1 year for residential desks sold at retail, but we offer a Free Lifetime Warranty unless specifically noted. Coverage includes the worksurface, the frame, the pedestal drawer slides, the leveling glides, and the lock cylinder — the components that determine whether the desk performs reliably across a full commercial lifecycle rather than degrading within a few years of daily use in an office.

An ADA-compliant desk provides a 27-inch minimum knee clearance under the worksurface, with 30 by 48 inches of clear floor space at the user position for a wheelchair user to approach comfortably. The worksurface should sit at the standard 29-inch ADA height for that position. Adjustable-height variants are worth specifying where a facility requires workstation accommodation across a mix of users with different ability profiles, since a fixed-height desk cannot serve every accessibility need on its own across a shared floor.
