Lockers & Personal Storage — Expert Answer

How far must locker banks be from fire exit doors?

IBC Section 1005 requires egress paths to maintain a minimum clear width at all times. A locker bank cannot project into the required egress width of a corridor (typically 44" for corridors serving more than 50 occupants). Locker banks placed perpendicular to an egress corridor must not reduce the corridor width below the required minimum. Locker doors, when fully open, must not block fire exit doors or reduce egress path width. Local fire marshals may have additional requirements for your occupancy type. A safe rule of thumb: maintain 60" of clear space between the face of open locker doors and any opposing wall or obstruction.
