What type of casters do I need for carpet vs. hard floors?

Hard nylon casters are designed for carpet — they roll well on carpet but will scratch hardwood and tile floors. Soft polyurethane or rubber-coated casters are designed for hard floors — smooth rolling without floor damage. Most office chairs ship with hard (carpet) casters as default. If you have hard floors, request soft caster substitution when ordering or purchase them separately — most use a standard 7/16" stem and are easily swapped.
