Its interior consists of shelves behind hinged doors — the feature that distinguishes it from a fireproof file cabinet, which uses hanging-file drawers instead. It carries a UL Class 350 rating, meaning the interior stays at or below 350°F during a 1700°F external fire exposure. Door lock type and case dimensions should be selected against the specific storage requirement, since content type and door-lock security needs vary considerably between installations.

A 1-hour Class 350 rating suits standard restricted-content storage, keeping interior temperature at or below 350°F during that exposure duration. A 2-hour Class 350 rating suits elevated-risk programs — legal, medical, or financial archives — extending the same protection to twice the duration. The rating reflects tested performance under a UL fire test rather than a general resistance claim. Choosing between the two durations generally comes down to how quickly local fire response is expected to arrive and how irreplaceable the stored content is.

Width runs 30 to 36 inches, depth runs 21 to 24 inches, and height runs 36 to 78 inches depending on configuration. The interior compartment accommodates binders, document boxes, and general supply storage. Cabinet weight runs 350 to 1,200 pounds depending on size and rating tier — the fire-rated insulation between the steel walls accounts for much of that weight. Taller units in the 78-inch range require particular attention to floor load and anchoring given their combined height and mass.

A 3-point key lock engages the top, center, and bottom of the door frame in a single motion, providing both restricted access and fire-seal integrity across the full door height. A 2-key set ships with each cabinet. This locking approach differs from a simple single-point latch in that it maintains consistent pressure on the door gasket along its entire length, which matters directly for the door's ability to hold its fire seal during an actual fire event. Shelf count should be chosen against the expected mix of binders and supplies being stored, since a heavier concentration of dense binders benefits from more, closer-spaced shelves than a mix of larger, lighter items.

Delivery is by pallet freight, generally scheduled against the receiving facility's installation crew availability. Cabinet weight, 350 to 1,200 pounds, requires liftgate or forklift delivery and typically a professional install crew at the archive room. Floor load capacity should be checked against cabinet weight before placement, particularly for units at the upper end of that weight range being placed on anything other than ground-floor concrete. Scheduling delivery well ahead of the planned installation date helps avoid delays, particularly for units near the top of the weight range.

Cabinet footprint should not obstruct the 36-inch accessible aisle expected in the surrounding room, and the door's swing arc should be planned into the layout separately, since a wide-opening door can encroach on that aisle even when the cabinet's static footprint does not.
