Power Modules

Power modules are surface-mount or in-surface power and data units built for desk, conference table, benching spine, and training table applications. The right form factor — edge-mount, flip-up recessed, grommet-mount, or pop-up — depends on the surface type and any installation constraints present at the position. Every power module in this category must meet UL 962A, the safety standard governing workstation relocatable power taps, which is a baseline requirement rather than an optional feature to look for when comparing available models across different manufacturers and series.

Edge-mount or clamp-mount units require no cutout in the worksurface, making them the simplest retrofit option for an existing desk already in service. Flip-up or pop-up recessed units require a 2.5 to 4-inch hole-saw cutout for in-surface installation into the worksurface material. Grommet-mount units fit a standard 2.5 or 3-inch grommet opening already present in the surface from prior installation. The form factor selected should match the worksurface construction and the facility's installation standard, since a surface that cannot accept a cutout points directly toward an edge-mount solution instead.

NEMA 5-15 standard 120V outlets provide AC power at each module position for standard office equipment. USB-A and USB-C Power Delivery ports are available at 18W, 30W, 45W, or 60W depending on the series selected, and device charging needs should drive the wattage selection — a laptop generally requires at least 45W to charge efficiently from the module during regular use. HDMI pass-through or RJ-45 data ports are available where video or hardwired network connectivity is required at the surface position for presentations or workstation connectivity.

A plug-and-cord inlet suits positions where a receptacle is accessible below the worksurface, allowing the module to plug directly into an existing circuit without additional electrical work. A hardwire whip connection suits permanent installations and requires an electrician to complete the final connection to the building's circuit. The inlet type selected should reflect the facility's electrical access and any local code requirement at the installation position, since a hardwire connection carries different code implications than a simple plug-in unit installed by facility staff.

UL 962A listing is required for all workstation and table power module installations across a commercial facility. This listing confirms the module has been tested against the standard for relocatable power taps used in furniture-mounted applications rather than fixed building wiring. Compliance should be checked against the facility's electrical standard and the requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction before a final selection is made — an unlisted module should not be installed in a commercial setting regardless of price or feature set offered by the manufacturer.

Power modules serve individual desk and workstation positions, conference and training table surfaces, benching spines, and reception or collaborative zone surfaces requiring accessible power and USB charging throughout the day. Module density — the number of AC outlets and USB ports per position — should be matched to the technology load anticipated at each position, since a single-outlet module will fall short at a position where multiple devices need simultaneous charging during a typical workday for a busy occupant at that desk.

An ADA-configured power module installation places outlets and charging ports within the forward-reach range of 15 to 48 inches off the floor for accessible operation. Surface-mounted desk modules at standard desk height typically fall within this range without modification to the mounting position. Pop-up modules installed in a conference table should be positioned within 30 inches of the accessible seat position so a wheelchair user can reach the outlet without stretching across the table, a placement that should be confirmed against the accessible table configuration before installation is finalized on site.
