Stand-Alone Desk Shells

A stand-alone shell is the worksurface and frame without integrated pedestals, which separates storage decisions from the desk itself. The shell weighs 60 to 130 pounds assembled, a figure that simplifies multi-unit receiving and staging on large deployments. Shells are common in benching plans, training rooms, hoteling stations, and any layout where storage is assigned by role rather than built into the desk, since that separation allows the same desk SKU to serve different storage needs. The product page for each model lists shell-only contents so buyers know exactly what ships, along with finished dimensions and frame type for planning purposes.

Shells standardize more cleanly than complete desks because a single shell pairs with several storage options — mobile pedestal, lateral file, or none — to serve different role types without changing the desk itself. This reduces the line-item count on a procurement order and allows storage to be reassigned later without replacing the desk, which matters most on deployments spanning multiple floors or offices. Per-shell pricing also runs lower than complete desk pricing, which improves overall cost when many units are involved across a facility. Standardized shell SKUs are typically documented in the collection planning guide alongside compatible storage components.

Commercial shells pair with mobile pedestals, typically in 3-drawer or 2-drawer file configurations, along with freestanding lateral files and modular bookcases from the same collection. Full-extension ball-bearing slides on these pieces are rated 75 to 100 pounds per drawer for box and file drawers, and 40 to 50 pounds for lateral file drawers. The coordinating storage page identifies matches by shell width and depth, with finish kept consistent across the line so a multi-office deployment presents a unified appearance. Matching should be confirmed before ordering, since mismatched width or depth can leave visible gaps at the desk edge.

Shells are built for 2-, 4-, and 6-person benching configurations using shared end panels, modesty screens, and connector kits that join adjacent units into a single run. Benching seats more users per square foot than individual desks while acoustic panels and screens preserve a measure of workflow privacy between neighboring positions. Each product page identifies which connector hardware and screens complete a given layout, since the required accessories vary by configuration and desk width. Benching layouts should be planned with the full accessory list in hand so the final order arrives complete rather than requiring a follow-up purchase.

Commercial shells use thermally fused laminate or high-pressure laminate over an engineered core, finished with PVC or 3mm edge banding for impact resistance at the desk perimeter. Thermally fused laminate is rated for 10,000 or more cleaning cycles when maintained with pH-neutral cleaners, which supports long-term appearance in high-traffic office settings. Material grade, edge profile, and finish family are listed on every product page, which allows multi-office deployments to be matched precisely across locations regardless of order timing. Higher-tier lines may also offer wood veneer finishes for executive-adjacent applications where appearance carries more weight.

Because the worksurface and frame stand independent of storage, shells reconfigure faster than complete desks when a floor plan changes. Tops can be rotated, swapped, or relocated; frames can be redeployed under new tops; mobile pedestals move with individual users rather than staying with a room, which suits organizations with regular seat reassignment. This modularity is why facilities planning for a 5- to 7-year reconfiguration cycle typically default to the shell format over an integrated pedestal desk. The lighter assembled weight of a shell also reduces the labor required each time a reconfiguration project takes place.

Commercial shells include 2- to 3-inch desktop grommets, modesty panel cutouts, and rear-edge wire troughs that route cords away from the legwell. Higher-tier shells accept grommet-mount power modules rated to 15 amps, with 2 to 3 AC outlets plus 2 to 4 USB-A or USB-C ports built into the desktop. UL-listed in-desk electrification is ordered as a separate line item and installed by a licensed electrician, since it is not standard equipment on the shell itself. Cable management accessories should be selected alongside the shell so grommet placement lines up with the intended power module.

A shell — top and frame, no pedestals — provides a full 22 to 26-inch knee clearance under the entire 48- to 72-inch desk width, with no pedestal intruding into the legwell, useful where a personal mobility device or under-desk file pedestal needs room. Clamp-mount monitor arms are typically installed at the rear edge; the shell carries the same 200- to 300-pound BIFMA surface rating as the parent stand-alone desk line, sufficient for dual monitors and standard desk equipment. Under-desk accessories such as keyboard trays and CPU holders mount to the underside of the top with manufacturer-supplied hardware, and any drilled mounting should be recorded in the procurement file so future reconfiguration can reuse the same hole pattern.

BIFMA-compliant shells carry the same 10 to 15-year structural warranty as complete desks from the same collection, the industry standard for commercial-grade construction, but we offer a Free Lifetime Warranty unless specifically noted. Coverage applies to the frame and worksurface assembly; storage components purchased separately carry their own terms, typically aligned to the same period when sourced from the same line. Warranty status and active production availability are listed on the product page, which matters most when a deployment is phased across multiple purchase orders over time. Confirming production status early avoids mismatched coverage on later phases of the same project.

A shell at standard 29- to 30-inch work height falls within the ADA accessible work surface range of 28 to 34 inches. Because a shell has no built-in drawers under the top, it naturally provides the 27-inch knee clearance height, 30-inch width, and 19-inch depth that ADA requires for an accessible seated position, along with the 30-by-48-inch clear floor approach required for wheelchair use. Commercial shells built to ANSI/BIFMA X5.5 standards meet the structural requirements, and the open knee well makes shells among the more accessible desk formats to position as an accessible workstation without additional modification.
