Lobby & Reception Seating

Lobby and reception furniture spans guest chairs, tandem seating, lounge chairs, sofas, and modular reception seating configured for waiting areas, building entrances, and public-facing gathering spaces. Unlike office task or conference seating, reception furniture is selected primarily for durability under high foot traffic and visual presentation, since it forms the first impression of a facility for visitors. Tandem seating — multiple seats joined on a shared frame — is common in higher-traffic lobbies where seating capacity per square foot matters, while individual lounge chairs and sofas suit lower-traffic, more residential-feeling reception areas. Upholstery grades across the category are commercial-rated for the sustained daily use a lobby experiences.

Individual guest and lounge chairs generally measure 26 to 32 inches wide and 30 to 34 inches deep, with seat height in the standard 17-to-19-inch range for easy entry and exit by a broad range of users. Sofas typically run 60 to 84 inches wide depending on two-seat or three-seat configuration. Tandem seating units are generally sized in two-, three-, and four-seat configurations, with each seat position averaging 22 to 26 inches wide along the shared frame. Facilities planning a lobby layout should account for at least 36 inches of clear walking space between seating groups to maintain circulation. Each product page lists exact dimensions for the specific model.

Fabric options for lobby and reception seating typically carry a Wyzenbeek abrasion rating of 40,000 double rubs or more, reflecting the sustained daily contact a lobby chair experiences compared to lower-traffic office seating. Cleanable vinyl is widely offered as an alternative to fabric, particularly for facilities that need to wipe down seating regularly rather than schedule fabric cleaning. Antimicrobial upholstery treatments are available and commonly specified for healthcare and education settings where infection control is a priority. Facilities should confirm the abrasion rating and cleanability requirement against the expected traffic level before finalizing an upholstery selection.

BIFMA X5.4, the lounge and public seating standard, applies to reception, lobby, and public-area seating and covers structural testing distinct from the general-office chair standard used for task seating. The standard addresses frame stability, seat and back durability, and load testing appropriate to lounge-style seating that is used differently than a task chair — typically lower impact per use but higher cumulative traffic across a public day. Facilities specifying for institutional, healthcare, or government procurement should confirm the specific model carries BIFMA X5.4 certification and retain documentation for compliance records.

Lounge and reception seating frames are commonly built from hardwood, steel, or a combination of both, with steel frames typically specified for higher-traffic commercial lobbies due to long-term structural stability. Foam density in the seat and back cushions is generally higher in commercial-grade reception seating than residential furniture, supporting appearance retention under sustained daily use. Tandem seating frames use a shared structural rail beneath multiple seats, distributing weight across the full unit rather than relying on independent chair legs, which improves stability in high-traffic configurations.

Tandem seating is available in two-, three-, and four-seat configurations sharing a single structural frame, suited to higher-capacity waiting areas where floor space is limited. Modular reception seating takes a different approach, using individual corner, armless, and end units that can be arranged into custom configurations — straight runs, L-shapes, or U-shapes — and reconfigured later as the space or traffic pattern changes. Facilities expecting to adjust lobby layout periodically often specify modular seating for that flexibility, while facilities with a fixed, permanent lobby footprint more commonly specify tandem units for their structural simplicity.

Guest chairs and lounge seating are generally available with fixed arms, which provide support for users entering or exiting the seat and can assist those with mobility limitations. Armless configurations are more common in tandem and modular seating where seats are positioned close together and a shared arm or no arm at all maximizes seating capacity per linear foot. Some tandem units include a single shared armrest between adjoining seats rather than individual arms for each position, balancing comfort against space efficiency in higher-traffic layouts.

Cleanable vinyl upholstery is specified when a facility expects to wipe down seating surfaces frequently rather than rely on fabric cleaning schedules, and it holds up well against spills and heavy daily contact in high-traffic lobbies. Antimicrobial treatments, applied to either fabric or vinyl, inhibit the growth of bacteria and are commonly specified in healthcare waiting rooms, school reception areas, and other settings with infection control requirements. Facilities should confirm whether the antimicrobial treatment is embedded in the material itself or applied as a topical finish, since the two approaches differ in how long the treatment remains effective under repeated cleaning.

Commercial lobby and reception seating carries structural warranties covering the frame, seat and back suspension, and any shared tandem rail assembly under normal daily public use, and we offer a Free Lifetime Warranty unless specifically noted. Coverage generally accounts for the sustained high-traffic conditions lobby seating experiences compared to lower-use office furniture, since frame joints and cushion supports see more cumulative wear over a comparable time period. Facilities should confirm warranty terms against the procurement standard in place before finalizing an order for a high-traffic public area.

ADA accommodations in lobby and reception areas require that a portion of seating provide a stable, firm surface at 17 to 19 inches in height with adjacent clear floor space of at least 30 by 48 inches for wheelchair users. Fixed arms on a portion of the seating assist users transferring from a mobility device. Circulation paths between seating groups should maintain at least 36 inches of clear width, widening to accommodate turning space near modular or tandem seating clusters. Facilities should distribute accessible seating options throughout the lobby rather than isolating them to one area, and confirm final configuration against the applicable accessibility code.
